In Terracina, culture is everywhere you look! The high concentration of inland medieval villages around Hotel Casa Yvorio are just begging for a visit from any traveler who wants to step back in time.
In Roman times, Terracina was such a popular Italian holiday destination that it was called “The Gate of the Sun". You can still see the traces of the Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans in the ancient quarter as well as the surrounding modern city of Terracina.
High up on Mount Saint Angelo, overlooking the city of Terracina, stands the Temple of Jove Anxur, 1 B.C.E.. Its ruins can be found around the Emilian Forum's former square, whose white floors are still preserved. You can also take in ancient culture and history in Terracina's historic center: visit the Cathedral of Saint Cesareo, Frangipane Castle, Venditti Mansion, and the Tower of the Rose, which now houses a museum.
Archaeology buffs can head to the nearby Circeo National Park to take in a great deal of paleoecological and prehistoric artifacts, as well as artifacts from the Imperial Era. For an outdoor excursion, head to Bassiano, one of the Touring Club's “Orange Flag” villages – renowned worldwide for its medieval castle and its traditional cured ham – or head to Fossanova, a village with a museum and medieval Cistercian Abbey. Don't miss the area's two other medieval treasures: Sermoneta with its castles and Saint Olive Church, and Roccamassima with its narrow, picturesque streets.
